Purpose & background
This course will familiarize practitioners with the four seismic analysis methods in ASCE 7: Equivalent Lateral Force (ELF), Modal Response Spectrum (MRS), Linear Response History (LRH), and Nonlinear Response History Analysis (NRHA). In addition, the process to generate floor response spectra to determine the accelerations and required attachment forces for nonstructural components and systems will be presented.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the analysis process and requirements for the Equivalent Lateral Force, the Modal Response Spectrum, Linear Response History, and Nonlinear Response History Analysis methods.
- Determine which analysis methods are permitted for seismic analysis in accordance with ASCE 7 for a given structure based on the structure characteristics and seismic hazard.
- Apply the Equivalent Lateral Force method of analysis to determine seismic demands on building structures as a final design or as a preliminary design for more rigorous analysis methods.
- Describe the similarities and differences in Modal Response Spectrum Analysis and Linear Response History Analysis and explain how these methods can be formulated into a “unified” seismic analysis methodology.
- Perform unified linear dynamic seismic analysis of structures using either the Modal Response Spectrum or Linear Response History Analysis method to determine seismic force and displacement demands in structures.
