Requirements
Civil engineering students are often interested in learning about Society Scholarships and Society Fellowships. The following information will help you better understand tuition assistance offered by ASCE. If you have questions not addressed here, please contact [email protected].
What is the difference between a scholarship and a fellowship?
Scholarships are for undergraduate students, provided they have at least one semester or quarter of study in the next academic year; fellowships are for graduate students.
If I am graduating from high school and will be a freshman in the fall, can I apply for a scholarship?
No, applicants must be current ASCE Student Members in good standing.
How do I become an ASCE Student Member?
If you are enrolled either full-time or part-time at a college or university you can become a Student Member by calling the Society's Customer Service Desk at 1-800-548-ASCE (2723). Membership is free, but requires the name of your university, degree you are studying for, and your expected graduation date. Annual renewal is not automatic; you must call annually to renew.
What is good standing?
You are in good standing when your ASCE Student Membership is considered active -- you are a current college student and have renewed your Student Membership.
Is there a common requirement among scholarships?
Yes. You must be an ASCE Student Member in good standing at the time of application and award.
ASCE has several scholarships. How do I choose the one to apply for?
You should review the rules for all Society Scholarships to determine the ones closest to your interest area. If, for example, you are interested in bridges, you should consider applying for the Eugene C. Figg, Jr. Civil Engineering Scholarship, provided you meet all other criteria. Water supply or environmental engineering students should consider applying for the John Lenard Civil Engineering Scholarship.
Can I apply for more than one scholarship?
Yes. You may apply for as many scholarships as you wish, but you must meet the criteria for each scholarship you apply for. Each application must be submitted individually and each must be complete.
I am in a combined BS/MS program. Do I apply for a scholarship or a fellowship?
You must decide whether you consider yourself an undergraduate or graduate student during the anticipated period of the scholarship/fellowship award. If you consider yourself an undergraduate student in a combined program, you should apply for a scholarship; if you consider yourself a graduate student in a combined program, you should apply for a fellowship. Please note: your decision to apply for a scholarship does not permit you to apply also for a fellowship and vice versa.
How much will a scholarship give me?
The amount each scholarship provides varies from year to year, depending on the selection committee’s evaluation of applications and financial health of the fund endowment. Scholarships and fellowships generally offer $2,500 to $5,000 per recipient.
If I am awarded a scholarship, do I get half of the amount in the first semester and another half in the second semester?
No, the full amount of the scholarship is paid at one time.
Does the money come to me?
If you receive a scholarship, the money is sent to your university to be applied against your tuition.
When are applications due?
Complete applications are due to the Honors and Awards Program office no later than February 10 of the year of award. If February 10 falls on a weekend, the application due date is automatically moved to the next business day.
What are my chances of getting a scholarship?
Not every applicant is rewarded with a scholarship or fellowship. Your GPA, financial need, and the seriousness you express for becoming a civil engineer are important factors in the selection process.
Assuming I am an ASCE Student Member in good standing, what are some common mistakes to avoid in my application?
Your presentation of a thoughtful scholarship application will show the selection committee whether or not you are serious about seeking tuition assistance. Careless mistakes may cause the committee to pass on your selection:
- Application form:
- Your application form must be legible and the information you provide must be accurate.
- You must sign the application form and you must include the signature of the faculty member as provided in the individual scholarship or fellowship rules.
- As an ASCE Student Member, your credential is S.M.ASCE. Be certain to include this credential, if you claim ASCE membership, and include your member number.
- Personal essay:
- You must include a 500-word essay as described in the individual scholarship or fellowship rules.
- Detailed annual budget using the budget template provided as part of the application form.
- Recommendation letters:
- You must include the number of recommendation letters called for in the individual scholarship/fellowship rules and they must be from the sources described in the individual scholarship or fellowship rules.
- Your recommenders must sign their reference letters.
- Transcript:
- You must request your most recent transcript from your university’s Registrar. It must bear the university’s official seal, stating it is an original transcript. Do not download a transcript from your university’s site, as this is not considered an official transcript.
- Beginning with the 2018 application year, you may submit a single transcript if you are applying for multiple scholarships.
- Resume:
- You must provide a resume, showing your student activities, honors, and work experience.
When does ASCE announce scholarships and fellowships and how will I know when I’ve been selected?
Generally, in spring, the Society’s Executive Director sends award letters electronically. If you have been selected for a scholarship or fellowship, you will receive a letter in your email inbox. Your faculty advisor will also receive a copy of the letter. Unsuccessful candidates will receive a letter letting them know they were not selected.
What do I have to do after I’ve been notified of my selection?
There are 3 items you will be required to provide. Your congratulatory letter will request:
- Acceptance form: you must complete and return this form, stating you wish to accept the scholarship/fellowship. If you are no longer interested in receiving the scholarship, you will be able to indicate your decision to decline the scholarship/fellowship. This form is due within 2 weeks of your notification.
- Headshot/Bio: to publicize your scholarship award, we ask for your recent color headshot and recent short bio.
- Enrollment verification form: you must complete this form after the start of the fall semester and return it to the Honors and Awards Program office no later than mid-December. This form will allow funds to be disbursed.
If I received a scholarship one year, am I automatically considered for the next year?
No. You must apply again, provided you are eligible under the rules of the individual scholarship.
