ASCE has honored the writing team of Ran Cao, Ph.D., A.M.ASCE; Anil K. Agrawal, Ph.D., P.E., F.SEI, M.ASCE; Sherif El-Tawil, Ph.D., P.E., F.SEI, F.ASCE; and Waider Wong with the 2023 Raymond C. Reese Research Prize for the paper “Performance-Based Design Framework for Concrete Barriers Subjected to Truck Collision,” Journal of Bridge Engineering, August 2021.

The authors developed new computational models to analyze truck collisions with bridge barriers, where they were able to quantify both damage levels and performance. Both the single-unit truck and tractor-semitrailer, representative of medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks, have been considered in their proposed performance-based design (PBD) framework. Validation examples included in the paper clearly demonstrate the use of this new approach by bridge designers. It is impacting the structural design practice as it is under consideration by the AASHTO committee.

The Raymond C. Reese Research Prize is awarded to the author or authors of a paper that describes a notable achievement in research related to structural engineering
