Policy

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) endorses, supports and promotes the professional licensure of engineers with appropriate standards for education, experience, examination, continuing professional development and professional conduct to protect and enhance the health, safety and welfare of the public.

Issue

ASCE advocates licensure as a professional engineer as necessary to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public. The licensure requirements for education, examination, experience and continuing professional development are intended to achieve that purpose.

Rationale

Professional Engineers are entrusted with the protection and enhancement of the health, safety and welfare of the public. Professional licensure of engineers is an imperative element in achieving these objectives. The potential for weakening of licensing requirements is detrimental to the public health, safety and welfare. ASCE is committed to appropriate and consistent standards for licensure.
