Purpose & background

The main intent of this course is to familiarize practitioners with the codes and standards that apply to crane and rigging safety and how to incorporate this information into the preparation of safe and practical lift plans. Familiarity with cranes is not required. All concepts can be easily followed by any professional of the A/E industry. This course is co-sponsored by the Construction Institute.

Learning outcomes

  • Analyze mobile crane load charts and be able to extract needed information to prepare a lift plan.
  • By understanding the uses and limitations of the major types of rigging and rigging hardware, calculate the actual loads applied to the rigging and identify the proper rigging and rigging hardware to be used for lifting different loads, and prepare a detailed, safe, and practical rigging plan.
  • Prepare a complete, safe, and practical lift plan incorporating mobile crane capacities, rigging plan, site conditions, and ground bearing requirements.
  • Describe alternative methods of lifting (i.e., gantries, lifting frames, etc.) and how lift plans will need to be modified to incorporate these methods.
