Schedule

Weeks 1–4

  • Week 1: Overview of ASCE 7‐16 provisions for determining wind loads on buildings (both directional and envelop methods)
  • Week 2: Determine wind loads on a 1‐story warehouse using directional procedure (MWFRS and C&C)
  • Week 3: Determine wind loads on a 50‐ft high rectangular building using the envelope procedure (MWFRS and C&C)
  • Week 4: Determine wind loads on an octagonal building with a cupula that has h=80 ft. using directional procedure (MWFRS and C&C)

Weeks 5–8

  • Week 5: Determine wind loads on a 200 ft. tall building that has top floor extend out beyond building face by 10 ft. around entire building and sits on an escarpment. Use directional procedure. Hz < 1.0
  • Week 6: Determine wind pressures on a building for several possible building sites to determine the most restrictive wind‐related site
  • Week 7: Select a building framing system from several possible candidates based on design wind pressures for each frame system (mix Hz < 1.0 and Hz > 1.0, building height and location constant, steel moment frame, concrete moment frame, rigid diaphragm)
  • Week 8: Determine the effects on base shear and overturning moments on a building based on varying site locations and design method (directional and envelope methods)

Weeks 9–12

  • Week 9: Determine wind loads on components and cladding for buildings
  • Week 10: Determine wind loads on roof mounted equipment and roof surface behind a 5 ft. tall parapet
  • Week 11: Determine wind loads on roof mounted solar collectors (compare to ground mounted collectors using ASCE 7‐ 22)
  • Week 12: Two story rectangular tornado shelter subject to EF 3 tornado loads
